I challenged myself to read 40 books this year and I’m at 25 books now. I know that I will reach my target, but today I’m looking back on the books that I’ve read so far and my best reads of 2018 (so far).
(You’ll notice that the list below has less than 25 books. That’s because I’ve left out all the books from the Wicca series by Cate Tiernan. I reread the whole series every once in a while since it’s my favourite, but I don’t count them for this. I’ve read them too often for that.)
Highest Rated
I rated three books with five stars: Snowspelled by Stephanie Burgis, The Underwater Ballroom Society edited by Stephanie Burgis and Tiffany Trent, School for Psychics by K. C. Archer.
After finishing Snowspelled, I became an instant fan of Stephanie’s work. Snowspelled was exactly the kind of story that I wanted to read, ever. It is set in a Regency setting with magic, with awesome, powerful women who like to kick up some dust. I absolutely love what Stephanie has done in this world. So I was excited to receive the ARC of The Underwater Ballroom Society since it has another story set in the same universe as Snowspelled. I knew there would be at least one story in this anthology that I’d love, but I found many more, and I added new authors to my ‘to watch’ list (the list of authors I look for in libraries and bookshops).
School for Psychics is very different from Snowspelled. It’s an urban paranormal story aimed at the New Adult demographic (20+), but I think it reads like a Young Adult story. It’s something completely different from what I’ve read recently and it still sticks out. It’s action packed with enough mystery and intrigue to keep you interested until the end.
I never expected that my highest ratings would be all different kinds of books: a novella, an anthology and a full novel. I know they won’t be for everyone, but I think they’re worth checking out, especially The Underwater Ballroom Society for its diversity and School for Psychics for a quick read during the summer holidays.
